Matthew was sitting at the tax office when Jesus called him. He did not wait until Matthew had become perfect. Jesus called him right where He found him. Matthew responded by getting up and following Him. This reminds us that God's call is not based on our past. Whatever mistakes, failures or limitations we may have experienced, Jesus can still give us a new direction and a new purpose. Matthew left his old life and became an apostle and evangelist. His transformation shows that an encounter with Christ can turn an ordinary life into an instrument for God's Kingdom.
In the Gospel, Jesus also says, “I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.” He came not simply for those who consider themselves righteous, but to call sinners to repentance and new life. Today, listen for God's call. There may be something He is asking you to leave behind, something new He is asking you to embrace, or someone He is calling you to serve.
When we answer Christ's call:
We receive a new direction.
Our past no longer defines our future.
Our gifts become useful for God's Kingdom.
We grow in mercy and humility.
Our lives become witnesses of God's grace.
Beloved, Jesus is still saying, “Follow Me.” Do not allow your past to make you believe that you are disqualified. Rise, respond to His call, and allow Him to make your life a testimony.
